Not sure I like the new system. Is great a stronger qualification than excellent? Is stronger a good enough qualifier for the qualifiers? Would it be better if I said “is great a very good qualfication, better than excellent”? How do you know what you know? I liked it better when I could cherry-pick my favorites from your list, bicker about their relative order, get excited about the ones I haven’t seen and curse you for your love of majorly flawed action pieces. HOW IS MIAMI VICE A MASTERPIECE WHEN FALLEN ANGELS IS MERELY ‘STRONG’?!?!? Answer me that you… you… HUMAN PARAQUAT! Scotten out.
Comment by Chris Scotten September 14, 2009 @ 1:10 pmOh Scotten, Miami Vice is a masterpiece in my book. Most wouldn’t agree, but I see it as one of the most important of recent films. As for the system, I agree these words can be interchangeable, and the tier system inevitably fails to correctly calculate the true wealth of a film. But let me see if I can clarify. I reserved MASTERPIECE status for films that I see as especially indispensable, favorites of the favorites, GREAT are timeless films that I love, but not as much as the previous tier, EXCELLENT signifies films that are well, excellently made and succeed on all levels, VERY GOOD are films that probably earn a 3 1/2 stars out of 4, and STRONG means just that, these films have strong elements but aren’t as successful as the previous tiers. I’m splitting hairs, because all of these films I either loved or liked. Still, in my mind I think it works. We’ll see, maybe I’ll change the wording just to pacify your demanding ass!
Comment by Glenn Heath Jr. September 14, 2009 @ 2:06 pmScotten, you bastard. Way to make me think about my format. Simple is better, and the colors just complicate the worth of the films themselves, which of course they are all great because they’re on the damn lists! Sometimes my crazy film friends actually make sense.
