Cactus Flower (Saks, 1969)

Walter Matthau stars as the lying New York dentist and Ingrid Bergman (in a fine comedic performance) plays his nurse/assistant/fake wife in this retro sixties comedy. Cactus Flower, overflowing with flower child imagery, bright colors, and psychedelic music, is constantly on the cusp of rendering the risky/sexual material displayed more prevalently in the 70’s, but never quite gets over it’s plush 60’s Hollywood look and feel. Goldie Hawn is charming, bubbly, and endearing in her Oscar winning turn as Toni, Matthau’s young love interest with enough questions to drive one nuts. But besides the good acting and a few wonderfully paced comedic sequences, not much else to write home about. Fun but forgettable.
