Emperor of the North Pole (Aldrich, 1973)

Not Robert Aldrich’s finest hour, but this mostly entertaining battle of wits does have a fine Lee Marvin performance pitted against an evil Ernest Borgnine. Keith Carradine’s young drifter grinds the nerves immediately, and one wonders why Marvin’s grizzled hobo doesn’t kick him out right away. Aldrich uses some great shots on a moving train to establish the world and relationship between the railroad men and the hobo’s, but ultimately this conflict becomes tediously one note.
