The Immortal Story (Welles, 1968)

A bit pretentious in execution, this Orson Welles directed film tells of a wealthy merchant who attempts to recreate a popular sailor’s story so that he can wield his power in a new way. Could this be Welles dealing with his own impotence over actors and in turn the film itself? Possibly, but the result is so damn slow and dated it’s hard to care one way or another. A good turn by the beautiful Jeanne Moreau saves the film from being too droll and one-note.
