52 Pick-Up (Frankenheimer, 1986)

Frankenheimer shows off a supurb technical prowess (mainly in the form of sweeping crane shots), forcing the traditional Neo-noir story into the background. The film feeds off this dynamic formal aesthetic, as if realizing it didn’t have enough story to keep interest. Blackmail, porno juke joints, and some clever, snappy characters dominate the plot of 52 Pick-Up, but it’s the strikingly scummy visuals that seep to the top.
