Across the Universe (Taymor, 2007)

Director Julie Taymor’s vibrant Beatles-themed musical deserves a certain amount of credit for ambition, however Across the Universe lacks any narrative cohesion, blatantly hopping around multiple characters with little regard for development. Throw in a Forrest Gump-like attention to 60’s historical landmarks and the whole experience feels a bit too fluffy for its own good. Even though Taymor builds a few incredible musical sequences (the bowling alley scene stands out), her uneven script and directing fail whenever the Beatles aren’t singing backup. Look at Taymor’s wonderful Frida for a better example of her exquisite talents.
